The pool

What the pool gives you

We rent a warm teaching pool at the community college, and the first levels stay in the shallow end where you can stand.

  • A ramp sloping into a still indoor pool, with a steel handrail along its side

    A handrail

A long rail runs down the ramp and along the shallow end, so there is always something to hold.

  • Wide pool steps leading into still shallow water, with wet footprints on the deck

    A warm shallow end

The first levels stay in waist-deep water, where you can stand with your shoulders under the warmth.

  • A stack of folded white towels on a wooden bench beside the pool, with plants behind

    A bench

A bench by the pool door holds your towel, a friend or family member, and a rest between levels.

What adult students say

“I stood at the rail the first morning and nobody asked me to let go. The instructor talked me through each step, and I never felt hurried.”

Joe B.Adult student

“The water is warm, the bench is right there, and everyone in the class is my age. I looked forward to my mornings at the pool.”

Charlie W.Adult student

“I came because my grandchildren swim and I wanted to be in the pool with them. I stayed because I liked the people.”

How tuition works

Our current figures are on the enrollment page, and we are glad to talk them through by phone.

  • What sets tuition

Tuition depends on your level and how many mornings a week you come. A class lasts forty-five minutes and a session runs eight weeks. The enrollment page shows our figures for the session.

  • Registration

A yearly registration covers your swimmer file and the placement visit. It is due when you register for your first session, and it is once a year.

  • Holding a place

Your first payment holds your place in a class. If a class is full, we put your name on the waitlist, offer places in the order people asked, and call or text the same day one opens. If you move up a level during a session, your place moves with you.

  • Billing

Tuition is billed by session on our enrollment page. You can pay there by card or at the front desk, and autopay is available if you prefer it. The page shows what is due before it is billed.

  • Help with tuition

Ask us whether lesson assistance is open this season. We handle each request privately.

  • Withdrawing

Tell us a week before the next session starts if you will not continue, by phone or on the enrollment page. If you need to stop partway through a session, call us and we will talk it through.

  • Missed classes and make-ups

A missed class can be made up in another class of your level within the session, space allowing. When the pool closes for weather or repairs, that class is made up too, and illness is handled the same way. Tell us as early as you can.

  • What you bring from home

Boards, noodles and belts are ours to share. A swimsuit or swim top, a towel and any goggles or cap you like come from you.

Questions before your first class

A few answers for adults who are not sure where to start.

I have never been in water above my knees. Can I come?

Yes. The first level starts at the rail in waist-deep water, and you stay in it for as long as you like. Nobody asks you to let go before you are ready.

Who is in the pool with me?

An instructor is in the water or on the step beside every swimmer, and no children are in the pool during our classes.

What happens at a placement visit?

You get in the water with an instructor, who watches how you enter, float with support and move along the rail, and then suggests a level. You can get out at any time, and a friend is welcome to watch from the bench.

What should I wear and bring?

A swimsuit or a swim top and a towel. Long swim tops and swim caps are welcome in every class, and goggles are up to you; we have a few pairs to try.

Where do I wait, and can a friend come?

There is a bench by the pool door for your towel and a friend or family member. Guests stay on the deck and do not need to change.

How long is a class?

A class lasts forty-five minutes, and a session is eight weeks. Classes run on weekday mornings, and the schedule shows which levels have room.
